Matriots Support for Ballot Initiatives

Our mission is to strengthen women’s political voices by supporting legislation and policies and uplifting the women who advocate for them.

The Matriots Action Fund is proud to support the proposed constitutional amendment submitted by Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights.

Our non-partisan organization is dedicated to ensuring Ohio’s women can thrive and prosper. To do so, Ohioans must have the right:

  • to dominion over their own bodies;
  • to be safe and healthy;
  • to economic equity through control over their own reproductive health and family planning; and,
  • to healthcare providers who are free from fear, miseducation, or delay on women’s health issues.

The Matriots believe bodily autonomy and access to life-saving care should not be used as political footballs. The proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution entitled “The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety” codifies these critical rights. The well-being of our families, communities, and country is directly impacted by the economic independence, health, and safety of women. Women must have access to family planning and contraception, reproductive choices, abortion, and pregnancy and miscarriage health care.

As stated by the Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Rights (OPRR): “No explanation should be required for a choice that allows a woman to enjoy the same status in society as a man: freedom to preserve her health and well-being.” Supporting women’s reproductive rights should not be a partisan issue. Yet, it has been used for decades to divide us.

We are thrilled that OPRR asked The Matriots to lend its support for women’s economic,social, and health equity by endorsing the proposed ballot language and constitutional amendment for reproductive freedom and abortion in Ohio.

Today, we stand with Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights.

Matriots Action Fund Stands Against Gerrymandering.

Fairly-drawn districts are vital to making democracy work. Fair representation is impossible when districts are drawn to disenfranchise the people living in them. The process of drawing unfair maps is called "gerrymandering."

Ohio's process for drawing these maps is broken. Ohio has overwhelmingly voted for fairly-drawn districts. Yet, as recently as 2022, partisan politician-drawn maps were deemed unconstitutional by the Ohio Supreme Court. These unconstitutional maps are used today.

Districts in these maps are drawn to protect current politicians or oust opposition. In Ohio, women candidates are a super-minority of the office holders and are often challenging the incumbents. Partisan redistricting in Ohio has led to less women serving in elected office. For Ohio to realize parity in elected offices, districts must be drawn fairly to represent the people.

Also, women are significantly harmed by gerrymandered maps. Maps that fail to reflect the Ohio voters fail to represent Ohio's women. Women make up more than 50% of the population, and more than 50% of the voters in Ohio. Tactics used to build unfair maps push certain demographics together (“packing”) and break other demographics apart (“cracking”). This decreases the impact of the vote and decreases the impact of women voters.

The Matriots support the 2024 Citizens Not Politicians ballot initiative to create an independent map-making body for the state of Ohio. You can learn more here: https://citizensnotpoliticians.org/

“Ohioans are perilously close to losing access to safe, legal, comprehensive reproductive medical care...This commonsense amendment ensures that physicians will be able to provide the care our patients need and deserve free from government interference.”
